Teacups for Japan 6th Grade
Objective:
Sculpt Japanese inspired Teacups out of clay to sell as a fundraiser to support the rebuilding of Japan. Students will have the option to make two pinch pot tea cups - one for themselves and one to donate, or donate both.
Unit Mission: Become a philanthropist by donating our talents of creating Japanese inspired artwork as a fundraiser for Japan tsunami relief efforts.

Rational: With the current recent crisis in Japan students can benefit from learning about what really happened and how disaster relief is a global effort. Middle school students like doing things for themselves or for people they care about so the intention is to develop a disposition for caring about another culture. They will be able to make two teacups – one for themselves to keep and one to donate as a philanthropist.

Pinch Pot Teacup
Objective: Use the Pinch Pot method to create a Japanese Inspired Teacup.
Write down the steps you remember for how to make a pinch pot.
1. Pat a ball out of clay.
2. One thumb halfway through center.
3. Two thumbs open up.
4. Shape and check sides are even.
Objective: Complete a second Pinch Pot,
(So you’ll have one for you & one to donate J)
Trim the top off the lip, and smooth out edges.
Objective: Use underglaze to add color, in preparation for etching a design into your teacups.
Vocab: Underglaze - Is a method of decorating ceramic. The decoration is applied to the surface before it is glazed.
Objective: Plan the design of your Japanese Inspired teacup patterns, by looking at Japanese symbols and images.
