I had decided to make this - 5 feet tall by 14 feet wide - two sided quilt as a reflection upon my time spent in Baltimore. I realized something about my community in Charles Village that I didn’t have in Bolton Hill. I realize that in my so-called shady neighborhood, I actually had neighbors that watched out for me very closely and cared for me more closely than before. I felt welcome and safe because I felt a part of my community. Where ironically when I lived before in the neighborhood Bolton Hill beautiful and clean as it was, I always heard more news about robberies and dangerous encounters with strangers. There was this tension about the rich and the poor living with borders.
In my experience there is a stigma about living in somewhat beaten down areas. But we have to face what we want to change. This is why I juxtaposed the two together, because there is “bad” in the good, and “good” in the bad.
