Altered Books - 8th Grade
Objective
ü Recycle a used book by altering it into a transformed artist book that tells something about your identity.
Concepts (Students Will Know)
ü Old books are great for making Altered Books.
ü Mixed media can be used to represent or express ideas.

Lesson 1 Introductions & Book Claim
Art Problem:
Check out the books on the table, flip through them for inspiration, and then share a comment with the class about something that resonated with you.
Guiding Questions:
Circle Share: Choose one out of three things to speak about
1) a comment on something you saw on the table in one of the books,2) Something about yourself,
3) ask Ms. Arocho any question.
Supplies:
Book Thing Books, Tables pushed together,
Exemplar Altered Books,
and Inspirational Art Books
Bookshelf to store books
Vocabulary:
An Altered Book is a book that has been modified into an artistic piece.
In art, Metaphors evoke our thoughts and feelings through visual representations.
Combining or mixing images together into one composition makes a Collage.
Assessment:
Did everyone share something during the circle?
Did students claim a book by writing their name inside?
Standards:

What happens when you put watercolor over glossy paper? Try watercolor over gesso.

Are you angry, sad, or disappointed with a concern you have?
Or the opposite are you in a good mood about where you stand about what’s important to you?
Are you super excited and happy about what’s next in your life?

A spread is two pages next to each other when a book is opened up.
