Objective:
Sculpt Japanese inspired Teacups out of clay to sell as a fundraiser to support the rebuilding of Japan.  Students will have the option to make two pinch pot tea cups - one for themselves and one to donate, or donate both.

Key Concepts:
Students will know
·      Disasters can be local or global issues
·      Philanthropy is giving your time, talent, or treasure
·      Basic ceramics vocabulary
·      Pinch Pots are created by using your hands to shape the clay

Skills Learned:
Students will be able to
·      Describe what happened in Japan
·      Fold origami kimonos and cranes
·      Use the pinch pot method to sculpt a teacup from clay
·      Use underglaze to add color to their clay teacup
·      Use basic ceramic tools to create designs
·      Use Sgraffito technique to decorate their teacup
·      Use glaze to waterproof their teacup

Artist: Printmaker - Katsushika Hokusai “The Great Wave”

Vocabulary: Pinch Pot, Glaze, Underglaze, Sgraffito, Bisque ware, Green ware, Kiln

Rational: With the current recent crisis in Japan students can benefit from learning about what really happened and how disaster relief is a global effort.  Middle school students like doing things for themselves or for people they care about so the intention is to develop a disposition for caring about another culture.  They will be able to make two teacups – one for themselves to keep and one to donate as a philanthropist.
