Expressive Portraits  Observation with Imagination 6th Grade

Development Rationale
Practice expressing moods and emotions.  During this age when experiencing dissatisfaction with art making is common, this exercise helps move away from the “It doesn’t look real” into “How it can feel real”

Students Will Know
Moods can be expressed visually

Be Able To
Use observation as a tool in their drawing
Draw with the intention to express something
Questions   
What is mood?
How can mood be expressed through color? Or lack thereof?
What does it mean to “Express” something?
What might you want to express about yourself? Your friend? (If you and a partner agree to draw each other)

Vocabulary
Gesture: Use expressive marks to capture what the subject is doing with their face.

Assessment    
Did they get what a gesture is?
Can they make expressive marks using the body?
